LUCY SEXTON, Independent Producer of the New York Dance and Performance Awards, aka The Bessies
About Lucy Sexton:
She has worked in dance and performance in different capacities for more than 25 years. She produces live events and documentary films, directs performance and theater, and continues to write and perform her own work. With Anne Iobst, she created the dance-performance group DANCENOISE in 1983, performing in New York nightclubs and theaters including WOW Caf, the Pyramid, 8BC, Performance Space 122, Franklin Furnace, and the Kitchen. They curated and hosted a weekly cabaret at King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut in the East Village. DANCENOISE went on to nationally and internationally for nearly two decades. They won a New York Dance and Theater Bessie Award for their show All the Rage and a “Jackie” Award for their nightclub performances. Sextpm teaches workshops in performance and compostion at such venues as Center for New Dance Development (Holland), Movement Research (NY), Yorkshire Dance Theatre (UK), Daghdha Dance (Ireland), the Harvey Milk High School (NY) and others. As a performer she has appeared in the work of Alien Comic, Charles Atlas, David Gordon, Jo Andres, Mimi Goese, Heidi Dorow, Steve Buscemi and Mark Boone Jr, Ishmael Houston-Jones, Richard Move, Sarah Shulman, and Alain Buffard among others. As a producer of live events, she is currently responsible for the annual benefits of Performance Space 122, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, and the MacDowell Colony.
